How do I Brew Better Coffee at Home-Gram Scale

February 2, 2026
Share

If you want to make consistently better coffee at home, the most useful tool you can add is a simple digital gram scale. A gram scale removes guesswork and provides reliable information for dialing in brew ratios. Coffee brewing is built on these ratios, and when you rely on scoops or eyeballing, those ratios will vary every time. Weighing your coffee and water gives you a repeatable starting point, which is how good coffee becomes reliable coffee.

A quick technical note, because I don't want the measurement police all up in me: when we’re weighing solid coffee, we’re measuring in grams. When we’re measuring liquids, we should technically use the term "milliliters" in the coffee world, though, we use grams as a shared language for both solids and liquids...because we're rogues.  When building brew ratios, one milliliter of water weighs one gram. So when we say “grams of water,” we’re really just using a practical shorthand that keeps brewing simple, consistent, and repeatable.  So get off me.

Consistency shows up most clearly when you use a standard brew ratio. A great starting place, and one we recommend often is 15:1. That means 15 parts water to 1 part coffee.  From there, you can adjust to taste, but the ratio gives you a reliable baseline that works across pour over, French press, AeroPress, and batch brewing.  Using this formula you can easily and quickly modify brew recipes to your taste preferences.  So if you have 28 gr. of coffee, you would stop brewing after adding 420 gr. of water (28 x 15 = 420) Or if you are wishing to brew two 8 ounce (473 gr) mugs of coffee, you would divide 473/15 and land on needing 32 gr. coffee.

You don’t need to buy expensive equipment to get this right. A basic digital gram scale that measures in grams and responds quickly is more than enough. No apps. No Bluetooth. Just a solid, affordable tool that helps you understand what you’re doing and repeat it tomorrow. We're from Chicago, we believe good brewing comes from clarity, not complexity. A gram scale gives you that clarity and better coffee, cup after cup.
