The spirit of this espresso is to evolve every six months or so.  It's gotten better with each iteration.  Our newest blend, much like the second industrial revolution, is energy-filled and vibrant and full of life.

It has a touch of cacao nib, with warm tobacco, vanilla & a pop of pomegranate.

It was in 1848 that the first railroad connection was laid from Chicago to Galena, Illinois.

It was the very beginning of rolling up sleeves in the gritty industrial yards of Pilsen.

It was the first year Chicago served as a vital connection point and distribution center.

The great gateway city.

Rich, bold and slightly sweet

This is one of the 3 that I had sampled. The other 2 were manos-something and ethophia-something, both of which are no longer in circulation. Luckily, out of the 3, this 1848 is my favorite. I like dark, bold and heavy roast brews and this fits the bill. It's lighter than Porter (which is also my favorite) but still firm bodied. Glad it's still available.

Bold and Flavorful

Big Shoulders Coffee’s 1848 blend is simply fantastic. I’ve been getting the beans for a while and am impressed with the consistency of the roast over time. Additionally, it works well with my drip coffee maker, my espresso machine, and my stovetop espresso maker.

Personal Favorite

This is my favorite espresso. It’s roasted just the right amount. I like the chocolatey notes. Super well balanced, it’s my daily go-to.

it's my everyday coffee

I had this for the first time at one of your coffee shops, and I loved the latte that you made with it. When I got my own espresso machine, I knew it'd be this coffee that I kept on hand.

True gold

I drink 1848 almost every morning--either at the State St cafe or brewed at home. Typically I brew single origins at home, but the 1848 is a unique blend.

Too Tame For My Taste

Pulls a decent shot at the right grind setting, but the flavor is too mild and weak for what I expect of a medium-dark roast.
