2025 US Coffee Roasting Champion: Diego Guartan
CONGRATULATIONS DIEGO!
We were able to sit down with Diego when he got back from Houston where he competed in the US Coffee Championships - and if you haven't heard (it's literally in the title of this blog post but ok) HE WON!! We are so proud of Diego for putting himself out there and being confident enough to compete. This was his FIRST TIME COMPETING - first in a qualifier round to even be able to get to Nationals, where he qualified in 5th place. And at Nationals knocked it out of the park to take home the title of 2025 US Coffee Roasting CHAMPION 👏
Here's a little bit of what we talked about:

Q: Esta es la primera vez que participas en un concurso de tostado. ¿Cómo te hace sentir ser campeón de EE. UU. después de competir por primera vez?
A (Diego): Me siento increíble de aver participado en una competición de este nivel y aver ganado me siento fantástico.
Translation:
Q: This is your first time ever entering a roasting competition. How does it make you feel to be the US Champion after your first time competing?
A (Diego): It feels incredible to have participated in a competition of this level and to have won - I feel fantastic.
Q: ¿Qué o quién te inspiró a empezar a participar en concursos de tueste?
A: La persona que me inspiró para entrar a esta competencia fue Eduardo Choza porque cuando él estaba entrenando para las nacionales del 2024 el me dijo que tenía talento y ganas para hacer lo y también que él quería ver más gente latina en esta clases de competencias.
Translation:
Q: What/who inspired toy to start entering in roasting competitions?
A: The person who inspired me to enter this competition was Eduardo Choza because when he was training for the 2024 Nationals he told me that I had the talent and drive to do it and also that he wanted to see more latin people in these kinds of competitions

Q: ¿Hiciste algo específico para prepararte para la competencia?
A: Lo que hice fue practicar rostizar todos los días y también hacer muchas preguntas a Eduardo en cómo puedo prepararme. También hacer muchos blends.
Translation:
Q: Did you do anything specific to prepare yourself for the competition?
A: I practiced roasting every day, and asked Eduardo a lot of questions about how to prepare myself. I also roasted a lot of blends.
Q: ¿Qué significa para usted ganar este concurso? Cuando te llamaron por tu nombre, ¿cómo te sentiste?
A: Lo que significa para mí es increíble porque estoy represando a la gente latina y especialmente mi querido Ecuador. Cuando iban a llamar a los ganadores, estaban sentando y cuando dijeron mi nombre no me pude levantar, perdí la fuerza de mis piernas.
Translation:
Q: What does winning this mean to you? When they called your name, how did it make you feel?
A: It's incredible what this means to me because I'm representing all the latin people and especially my dear Ecuador. I was sitting when they were about to name the winners, and when they said my name I couldn't stand up, I lost all the strength in my legs!
Q: ¿Cómo te sientes acerca de ir a la Competencia Mundial? ¿Tu enfoque será similar o diferente al tuyo para los Nacionales?
A: Me siento ansío y nervioso pero espero de dar lo mejor de mí y si es posible ganar. Entrando a la world competition, voy a tener el mismo plan de estar preparado y con la misma mentalidad.
Translation:
Q: How are you feeling about going to the World Competition / will your approach be similar or different to yours for Nationals?
A: I feel eager and nervous but I hope to give my best and [think] yes it's possible to win. Entering the world competition, I'm going in with the same preparation plan and same mindset.
